A Transformative Two-Week Ayurveda Retreat at Kalari Kovilakom, Kerala, India
The Ultimate Authentic Wellness Adventure
For many Australians, adventure means scaling mountains, diving coral reefs or chasing adrenaline. But what if the greatest adventure wasn’t outward at all? What if it was the journey back to yourself?Hidden amongst the lush landscapes of Kerala, known as the wellness hub in southern India, Kalari Kovilakom offers one of the world’s most authentic Ayurvedic wellness experiences. Housed within a beautifully restored 200-year-old palace, this isn’t a luxury spa retreat with a few wellness treatments sprinkled into the itinerary. It is a medically guided, deeply immersive Panchakarma program that has been refining minds and bodies for generations.
Arriving Like Royalty
The experience begins the moment you arrive. Stepping through the palace gates, I was welcomed with genuine warmth, a fragrant jasmine garland and a freshly harvested coconut. The pace immediately softened. After months of relentless work and several days of travel, I could almost feel the stress beginning to dissolve before I’d even unpacked. The palace itself is extraordinary. Traditional Kerala architecture, peaceful courtyards and manicured gardens create an atmosphere that feels timeless. There is an unmistakable sense that this is a place dedicated to healing.
My room was a spacious sanctuary complete with a king bed draped in mosquito netting, herbal tea station, ensuite, air conditioning and every comfort needed for the coming fortnight. Then came one of my favourite surprises. Guests swap their everyday wardrobe for simple white cotton kurta uniforms worn throughout the retreat. Comfortable, practical and wonderfully freeing, they eliminate the daily decision of what to wear. Three sets are provided and yes, you get to take them home.

Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Wellness
Every guest begins with an extensive consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor. Following pulse diagnosis, blood pressure checks, tongue examination and a detailed discussion of my health history, my personalised treatment program was designed around my individual constitution or dosha. No two guests follow exactly the same schedule. That personalised approach is one of the elements that makes the immersive Kalari Kovilakom experience unique. My first treatment was an invigorating full-body exfoliation massage performed by two therapists working in perfect synchronisation. It was a cleansing, grounding and energising treatment, a fitting introduction to what lay ahead. A delicious vegetarian lunch followed, individually prepared according to my treatment plan and I quickly realised the clean fresh cooked food would become just as important as the therapies themselves.
The Daily Rhythm
Life at Kalari Kovilakom settles into a beautifully restorative rhythm. Mornings begin with gentle yoga suitable for every level, followed by consultations with the Ayurvedic doctor before heading into a series of therapeutic massage and cleansing treatments. Each afternoon, tomorrow’s personalised schedule and menu appear, allowing guests to simply surrender to the process without needing to make decisions. The therapists deserve special mention. There is an unmistakable calmness about them. Their intuitive healing touch and quiet presence become just as restorative as the variety of treatments themselves.
Mindful Dining
Meals are an integral part of the healing journey. Served within the elegant palace dining room overlooking peaceful gardens, every dish is individually prepared according to your prescribed diet. Much of the produce is grown onsite or sourced locally, with fresh soups, fragrant curries, seasonal vegetables and traditional dosas showcasing Kerala’s remarkable cuisine. Breakfast follows Ayurvedic principles by serving only one type of fruit at a time. During my stay that meant beautifully ripe mangoes, papaya, star fruit, avocado and the delicious local chikku. Guests dine silently, without mobile phones, allowing complete focus on the flavours, textures and nourishment of every meal. Eating with my hands rather than cutlery quickly became one of the most unexpectedly mindful experiences of the retreat. As someone living with coeliac disease, I was delighted to discover the kitchen caters exceptionally well for gluten-free guests, with wheat products rarely featuring in traditional Ayurvedic cooking.
Nature as Medicine
Movement is gently encouraged throughout the program. A peaceful 500-metre walking circuit winds through tropical gardens alive with birdsong, squirrels, curious mongoose sightings and the changing moods of Kerala’s monsoon skies. Each afternoon guests gather for fish feeding a surprisingly lovely ritual that encourages conversation and connection. Yoga nidra, pranayama breathing sessions and meditation further deepen the experience, while individual tuition is available for beginners. The yoga shala itself is one of the retreat’s most peaceful spaces, supported by patient teachers who meet every guest exactly where they are.

Evenings of Culture & Learning
After dinner, the palace comes alive with cultural experiences. Cooking demonstrations, classical Indian dance performances, traditional music, Ayurvedic lectures and fascinating talks about the palace’s restoration provide meaningful insight into Kerala’s rich heritage. Far from being simply a wellness retreat, Kalari Kovilakom offers an authentic immersion into one of the world’s oldest holistic healing traditions.
More Than a Retreat
Many guests arrive carrying the invisible weight of modern life—burnout, digestive issues, chronic stress, hormonal imbalance, inflammation or simply exhaustion. Others return year after year as part of their ongoing health maintenance. The retreat commonly supports conditions including digestive disorders, arthritis, skin conditions, anxiety, diabetes management, healthy ageing and post-illness recovery, while many guests simply come to reset before life becomes overwhelming. Digital detox is gently encouraged, with internet available only in guest rooms to maintain the peaceful atmosphere throughout the palace. Daily laundry, personalised care and genuinely attentive staff remove every practical concern, allowing complete focus on healing. The retreat’s commitment to the local community by providing free Ayurvedic health clinics for neighbouring villages is a commendable offering.

The Verdict
Wellness tourism is booming worldwide, but authenticity is increasingly difficult to find Kalari Kovilakom doesn’t promise quick fixes or Instagram moments. Instead, it offers something far more valuable a genuine opportunity to slow down, reconnect with yourself and experience Ayurveda exactly as it has been practised for centuries. The first few detox days can be challenging. But by the end of two weeks, there is an unmistakable shift in energy, clarity, sleep, digestion and outlook. You don’t simply leave feeling relaxed, glowing and ready to tackle future adventures . You leave (as I did) with practical tools, a personalised post-retreat lifestyle plan and a renewed appreciation for what true wellbeing feels like. For travellers searching for an adventure that nourishes every part of who they are, this may just be the ultimate journey.
