Jake Wilson tells it like it is… “I am a huge fan of sleeping in my rooftop tent and I generally keep a sleeping bag in the back of my 4WD. I’ve used a wide variety of brands over the years, most recently the Mont Brindabella XT 700

Jake tested out the sleeping bag last night, sleeping in his rooftop tent in Jindabyne, NSW with the temperature 4 degrees in weather that was incredibly windy and rainy. “It was great, I slept really well, the bag was really warm”.

Other things Jake has found, using the sleeping bag:

It is surprising how well the Mont Brindabella XT 700 puffed out and, it was very comfy while I was in it then it packed down really tight (into the bag).

Often I don’t pack a sleeping bag away, it’s kept laid out ready to go inside my rooftop tent, especially when moving daily on a longer trip, packing up and down – such as crossing East Coast Australia to Western Australia or up and down the East coast.

It’s common for me to park anywhere along the coastline (Byron Bay, Palm Beach, South West Rocks etc) and set up the rooftop tent and crawl into a sleeping bag to watch the surf or watch the sun go down”.

What we liked about the Mont Brindabella 700 XT

  • It’s super – light (contains ethically sourced duck feathers).
  • The bag itself has a sturdy plastic strap that I used a few different ways – to attach to the roof top tent or hang up on the outside or inside of the vehicle (when camping overnight). Also, it doubles as a bag for dirty laundry or clean clothes (not both at the same time obviously).
  • The bag is tapered to the sleepers body, which means air is kept warm inside the sleeping bag but it also means the sleeping bag doesn’t take up too much space like many sleeping bags can. That means it’s lighter to carry as well as there’s less material.
  • The temperature range allows for winter sleeping, minus the chill, which means more beachside camping, more winter waves and less people.

“I like the sleeping bag hood too, as an option for 3am temperature drops and when I forget a pillow I can use the hood as head protection”.

“It’s really soft and feels light, the fold up is easy, I love the bag it comes in. I can see how the sleeping bag design won an international design patent, the shape of the bag really keeps the heat in”.

Any cons?

“You can’t fit anyone else in it, so my wife has to have her own. So it’s less snugly in that way”.
